Is 70/30 Microfiber Better Than 80/20?

Dec. 13, 2024

The choice between 70/30 microfiber and 80/20 microfiber largely depends on the intended use and specific requirements of the fabric. Both ratios refer to the blend of polyester and polyamide (nylon) fibers in microfiber cloths, with the first number representing polyester content and the second representing polyamide content. Here's a breakdown of the differences and when one might be better than the other:

1. Durability and Strength

80/20 Microfiber (Polyester/Nylon):

Better for strength and durability. The higher polyester content makes the fabric more robust and resistant to wear, which is especially important for high-use items like cleaning cloths, towels, or upholstery.

Longer lifespan. This ratio tends to last longer under tough conditions, making it suitable for commercial cleaning and industrial applications.

70/30 Microfiber (Polyester/Nylon):

Slightly less durable. The lower polyester content makes it somewhat less strong than the 80/20 microfiber but still very durable. It may not withstand rougher cleaning tasks as long as 80/20, but it still offers a good lifespan for most household and light commercial cleaning tasks.

2. Absorbency

80/20 Microfiber:

The higher polyester content means less absorbency than 70/30. While still effective, it may not absorb moisture as efficiently as a 70/30 blend, making it slightly less ideal for applications requiring high absorbency, like drying dishes or mopping floors.

70/30 Microfiber:

Higher absorbency due to the greater polyamide content. Polyamide (nylon) is highly absorbent and helps the cloth soak up liquids more efficiently. This makes it a good option for cleaning tasks involving moisture, such as wiping up spills or cleaning windows without streaks.

3. Cleaning Performance

80/20 Microfiber:

Better at picking up dirt and debris. Due to the higher polyester content, these fibers are stiffer, which helps the cloth to grab and trap dust, dirt, and particles better than 70/30. This makes it excellent for dry cleaning, dusting, and general cleaning tasks that require scraping up particles from surfaces.

70/30 Microfiber:

While still effective, the 70/30 microfiber may be a little less aggressive at picking up dust and debris than the 80/20 blend. However, it excels in cleaning delicate surfaces because it is softer and less abrasive, reducing the risk of scratching or damaging sensitive materials like glass or polished surfaces.

4. Softness and Gentleness

80/20 Microfiber:

Tends to be a bit rougher due to the higher polyester content. This makes it less ideal for use on sensitive surfaces, but great for tasks where abrasive action is needed (e.g., scrubbing tough stains or cleaning floors).

70/30 Microfiber:

Softer than 80/20, making it a better choice for polishing and cleaning delicate surfaces. It is gentler on things like LCD screens, car finishes, and fine furniture.

5. Cost

80/20 Microfiber:

Generally, more affordable due to the higher polyester content. Polyester is less expensive than polyamide, so 80/20 microfiber is often cheaper to produce and, as a result, typically costs less.

70/30 Microfiber:

Slightly more expensive because of the higher polyamide content, which is more costly to produce. However, this added cost may be justified by the increased absorbency and softness of the cloth.

Which One is Better?

For general cleaning and durability: If you need a microfiber cloth for heavy-duty cleaning, dusting, or polishing, 80/20 microfiber is often the better choice. It’s more durable, cost-effective, and efficient for cleaning tasks that involve dirt and debris removal.

For cleaning with high absorbency and on delicate surfaces: If your primary need is for cleaning moisture, drying, or cleaning delicate surfaces without causing damage, 70/30 microfiber is better. Its higher polyamide content makes it more absorbent and softer, perfect for tasks where moisture retention or gentle cleaning is required.

Ultimately, the "better" microfiber blend depends on your cleaning needs—whether you prioritize strength and debris removal (80/20) or absorbency and gentleness (70/30).
